Marvin Tate's Weight of Rage

MARVIN TATE is a performance poet, singer, lyricist, author, visual artist, and educator. His recent collaborations with sound-artist Joseph C. Mills and video-performance artist, Jefferson Pinder, highlight his ability to combine spoken word and performance with other media. Spin Magazine has written, “Tate, a Chicago poet and frontman, is a perennial favorite of other local musicians; his lyrics are confrontational, literary, and even sweet.” Marvin was awarded a grant from the Poetry Foundation to teach poetry in The Stateville Correctional Center (for men), and was selected by The Propeller Fund to revisit his old neighborhood in North-Lawndale to produce a series of performances called Public Singing. He is the founder and leader of the legendary funk band D-settlement, a funkadelic-infused band that continues to receive critical acclaim after forming in the late nineties. His work has appeared on Def-Jam Poetry, This American-Life, The Heartlands in San Francisco, the Chicago Blues Festival, the Eindehoefen Museum in the Netherlands, and in other venues around the world. The Weight of Rage is the third annual exhibition of work developed in classes in the Prison and Neighborhood Arts Project at Stateville Prison. The show brings together work from incarcerated artists and teaching artists and writers in the Prison + Neighborhood Arts Project (PNAP) at Stateville Correctional Center in Joliet, IL to explore the question, “how does the state identify you?” For many inmates the only image they have of themselves is their state identification card. Through portraiture and figurative abstraction, the art, writing, video, and audio work of the show addressed the distinct experiences of the artists, as well as the terms of connection and alienation in a prison nation at large. Performing with Marvin are AARON SHAPIRO on bass & BILL MACKAY on guitar.
