Josh Berman is a cornetist, improviser, composer, and music presenter. An essential contributor to Chicago’s active free jazz and improvised music scene, his work encompasses performing in a variety of highly collaborative formats, while also creating performance opportunities for musicians, having produced hundreds of shows in Chicago over the past 25 years. He has participated in over 40 recordings, with his own projects, Old Idea, Josh Berman and his Gang, and Josh Berman Trio receiving critical acclaim in the New York Times, Chicago Tribune, DownBeat and many other publications. His recordings can be found on Chicago’s legendary Delmark Records, Austin’s Astral Spirits Records and most recently on Corbett Vs Dempsey.

The concert this evening consists of 3 sets of duo pairings each performing 40 minute sets of original music.

Joshua Abrams (bass) and Josh Berman (cornet) have been performing as improvisers and composers in Chicago for decades laying ground work for a large, diverse, and colorful music scene. Their work has been well documented by their respective groups Natural Information Society and the Josh Berman Trio. Tonight’s pairing will be undoubtedly a meeting not to be missed.

Sun Speak


The Chicago-based duo Sun Speak comprises longtime collaborators Matt Gold (guitars) and Nate Friedman (drums and percussion). Since the 2014 release of their debut recording Light Blue Light, Sun Speak has continued to solidify a compositional voice encompassing folk, jazz, and experimental music. Their new EP Sacred Rubble is out this fall on Ears & Eyes Records.

Chicago improvisers Jeremy Cunningham (drums) and Dustin Laurenzi (saxophone/electronics) share a common fascination with melody, sound and rhythm that has brought them together in countless configurations since their first meeting in 2012; however, the transparency of the duo setting allows these two like-minded musicians’ voices to shine even more directly.
