Cheltenham Jazz Festival Around Town

Established in 2006, Xposed Club offers a vibrant and varied programme for alternative music taking place once a month at University of Gloucestershire in Cheltenham. Now in its tenth year, and a special collaboration with Cheltenham Jazz Festival Around Town, we present an evening in three parts combining improvised performance alongside modern composition pieces from Chinese percussion virtuoso Beibei Wang, Chicago cornetist Josh Berman, who brings a trio featuring regular bass player Jason Roebke plus very special guest percussionist Paul Lytton. And performing a short middlefloor set will be Xposed Club regular Chris Cundy playing excerpts from The Disruptive Forest a solo piece for bass clarinet.

Beibei Wang

“Beibei Wang is nothing if not flamboyant.” The Times

Seeing a meteoric rise in the classical percussion world in recent years, both in China and internationally, Beibei Wang holds a double Masters Degree at Central Conservatory of Music and Royal Academy of Music respectively. Her performances encompass traditional, classical, conceptual and visual music with a repertoire that spans contemporary, jazz, rock, exotic and Chinese traditional music.

Josh Berman

“One of the most thoughtful musicians on Chicago’s diverse jazz and improvised music scene.” Chicago Reader

For more than ten years, cornetist, improviser, composer, and music presenter Josh Berman has been an essential contributor to Chicago’s active improvised music scene. His work encompasses both developing opportunities for presenting improvised music, and performing in a variety of highly collaborative formats. He’s a cofounder of critically acclaimed Umbrella Music, as well as cocurator of the Emerging Improvisers’ Organization. He’s performed as bandleader of his own groups, Josh Berman Trio, Josh Berman’s Old Idea, and Josh Berman and His Gang, and as coleader of Chicago Luzern Exchange.

Chris Cundy’s The Disruptive Forest (solo)

“Swirling around the songs was bass clarinet player Chris Cundy, like a birdsong interrupting an argument.” Los Angeles Times

The Disruptive Forest for solo bass clarinet is a new work by Chris Cundy who performs excerpts from it tonight. Splitting his time between Canada and the UK where he lives, Chris has toured internationally with groups including Cold Specks, Timber Timbre, Guillemots, and Fyfe Dangerfield. Other collaborations have included working with songwriters Little Annie, Baby Dee, Devon Sproule, and Anna Homler and his practice extends from popular music to theatre, experimental and improvised performances.
